Women’s World Cup 2017: Team India looking for semi-final spot

India,England, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand, are involved in a tense tussle for the semi-final spot in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017. With the tournament nearing the end of the league stages, here are the scenarios for each team.

The ICC Women’s World Cup 2017 is approaching the knock out stages. The league stages are coming to an end and the situation is becoming tense. After 20 league games, there are five teams in contention for the four semi-final spots. Hosts England, reigning world champions Australia, Mithali Raj-led India, South Africa and New Zealand are the teams vying to seal their spot in the knockout stages.

In this format, where the eight teams play each other, the likes of India and Australia have failed to seal their spot in the knock-outs. After winning their first four games comprehensively, Australia lost by three runs to England while India were thrashed by 115 runs against South Africa. These two results have thrown the race wide open. With the last week of the league games approaching, here is what each team needs to do in order to seal a place in the semi-finals.

England women’s team

Position in Points table: 1

Matches – 5, Won – 4, Lost – 1, Points – 8

Games remaining: vs New Zealand (July 12), vs West Indies (July 15)

What they have to do: England need to win one of their two games to enter the semi-finals. If they lose both, then they must hope South Africa do not win their last two league games. In case one of their matches are washed out, then they can still qualify.

Australia women’s team

Position in Points Table: 2

Matches – 5, Won – 4, Lost – 1, Points – 8

Games remaining: vs India (July 12), vs South Africa (July 15)

What they have to do: Australia need to win only one out of their last two games to secure qualification. If they lose both, they must ensure that they do not lose by a big margin and also hope that New Zealand do not win their remaining two games.

India women’s team

Position in Points Table: 3

Matches – 5, Won – 4, Lost – 1, Points – 8

Games remaining: vs Australia (July 12), vs New Zealand (July 15)

What they have to do: After four consecutive wins, Mithali Raj’s side came crashing down to earth with a 115-run loss to South Africa. The heavy loss has taken a toll on their net run-rate which is +0.263. If India win one of their games, they are through to the semi-finals. If they lose to Australia and New Zealand lose to England, then their last game against the White Ferns becomes a virtual shoot-out.

New Zealand women’s team

Position in Points Table: 4

Matches – 5, Won – 3, Lost – 1, N/R – 1, Points – 7

Games remaining: vs England (July 12), vs India (July 15)

What they have to do: The one point earned in the no-result against South Africa has kept New Zealand afloat. They have the best net run-rate among the sides with +2.301. If they win one of their remaining games, they are through. If they lose both games, they must hope South Africa lose their last two games. If they lose to England, India lose to Australia and then South Africa wins their last two games, then New Zealand’s last league game against India is a virtual shoot-out.

South Africa women’s team

Position in Points Table: 5

Matches – 5, Won – 3, Lost – 1, N/R – 1, Points – 7

Games remaining: vs Sri Lanka (July 12), vs Australa (July 15)

What they have to do: South Africa must win their remaining two games and ensure New Zealand do not win their last games. If the Proteas beat Sri Lanka and England, Australia register wins, then they will guarantee themselves a place in the semi-finals.
